The book discusses different aspects of measurement and assessment including the psychological interview and psychological test along with the role ethics can play among such a process. It is of importance when developing a new measure to incorporate one´s knowledge of statistics. The question of utility in diagnosis arises and of the utility of psychometrics and cultural competence to a test. A career/business assessment occurs along with an assessment of learning disability. An in-depth discussion occurs of the cognitive affective processing system (CAPS). The purpose of book one is to demonstrate the many functions, factors, and implements involved in the process of measurement and assessment. It is the influence of personality characteristics affecting our social and occupational choices. The development of personality characteristics occurs not during one but each developmental stage of the lifespan. This book discusses such theories as those belonging to Erik Erikson, Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, Sigmund Freud, Erich Fromm, Gordon Allport, among other theorists. The greatest focus among the book centers on Gordon Allport and Erich Fromm and his humanistic psychoanalysis. Fromm´s thesis is despite mankind being pulled apart from their union among one another by evolution, they continue to possess the power of reason. As ethics can represent an expansion into multiple domains, so too can the code of ethics as set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA). These principles of ethics guide the behavior of practicing psychologists among their profession. This set of ethical principles can act as a guide of behavior for individuals within multiple facets of life. The major principles to the Code of Ethics involve avoiding harm, practicing fairness, avoiding misrepresentation, providing fair access to treatment, and respecting the value and worth of all. 1. Modeling Contextual Effects in Longitudinal Stu...

Longitudinal data are critical for understanding how individuals change across time. Researchers are faced with a complex task when modeling the contexts in which longitudinal processes unfold. ´´Modeling Contextual Effects in Longitudinal Studies ´´reviews the challenges and alternative approaches to modeling these influences and provides methodologies and data analytic strategies for behavioral and social science researchers. This accessible guide provides concrete, clear examples of how contextual factors can be included in most research studies. Each chapter can be understood independently, allowing readers to first focus on areas most relevant to their work. The opening chapter demonstrates the various ways contextual factors are represented--as covariates, predictors, outcomes, moderators, mediators, or mediated effects. Succeeding chapters review ´´best practice´´ techniques for treating missing data, making model comparisons, and scaling across developmental age ranges. Other chapters focus on specific statistical techniques such as multilevel modeling and multiple-group and multilevel SEM, and how to incorporate tests of mediation, moderation, and moderated mediation. Critical measurement and theoretical issues are discussed, particularly how age can be represented and the ways in which context can be conceptualized. The final chapter provides a compelling call to include contextual factors in theorizing and research.´´ Modeling Contextual Effects in Longitudinal Studies´´ will appeal to researchers and advanced students conducting developmental, social, clinical, or educational research, as well as those in related areas such as psychology and linguistics.

Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders: ...

The growth of interest in newly developed porous materials has prompted the writing of this book for those who have the need to make meaningful measurements without the benefit of years of experience. One might consider this new book as the 4th edition of ´´Powder Surface Area and Porosity´´ (Lowell & Shields), but for this new edition we set out to incorporate recent developments in the understanding of fluids in many types of porous materials, not just powders. Based on this, we felt that it would be prudent to change the title to ´´Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders: Surface Area, Porosity and Density´´. This book gives a unique overview of principles associated with the characterization of solids with regard to their surface area, pore size, pore volume and density. It covers methods based on gas adsorption (both physi and chemisorption), mercury porosimetry and pycnometry. Not only are the theoretical and experimental basics of these techniques presented in detail but also, in light of the tremendous progress made in recent years in materials science and nanotechnology, the most recent developments are described. In particular, the application of classical theories and methods for pore size analysis are contrasted with the most advanced microscopic theories based on statistical mechanics (e.g. Density Functional Theory and Molecular Simulation). The characterization of heterogeneous catalysts is more prominent than in earlier editions; the sections on mercury porosimetry and particularly chemisorption have been updated and greatly expanded.

Natural-Born Cyborgs

From Robocop to the Terminator to Eve 8, no image better captures our deepest fears about technology than the cyborg, the person who is both flesh and metal, brain and electronics. But philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark sees it differently. Cyborgs, he writes, are not something to be feared--we already are cyborgs. In Natural-Born Cyborgs, Clark argues that what makes humans so different from other species is our capacity to fully incorporate tools and supporting cultural practices into our existence. Technology as simple as writing on a sketchpad, as familiar as Google or a cellular phone, and as potentially revolutionary as mind-extending neural implants--all exploit our brains´ astonishingly plastic nature. Our minds are primed to seek out and incorporate non-biological resources, so that we actually think and feel through our best technologies. Drawing on his expertise in cognitive science, Clark demonstrates that our sense of self and of physical presence can be expanded to a remarkable extent, placing the long-existing telephone and the emerging technology of telepresence on the same continuum. He explores ways in which we have adapted our lives to make use of technology (the measurement of time, for example, has wrought enormous changes in human existence), as well as ways in which increasingly fluid technologies can adapt to individual users during normal use. Bio-technological unions, Clark argues, are evolving with a speed never seen before in history. As we enter an age of wearable computers, sensory augmentation, wireless devices, intelligent environments, thought-controlled prosthetics, and rapid-fire information search and retrieval, the linebetween the user and her tools grows thinner day by day. ´´This double whammy of plastic brains and increasingly responsive and well-fitted tools creates an unprecedented opportunity for ever-closer kinds of human-machine merger,´´ he writes, arguing that such a merger is

The Portico 5012 is a dual channel mic pre featuring Neve’s custom input and output transformer designs. In addition to individually selectable phase, mute, phantom power and a fully sweepable high pass filter, the 5012 incorporates a ´´Silk” circuit which yields the rich warmth and presence of the renowned classic designs.Microphone InputThe microphone input is balanced but not floating, being a variant of an instrumentation amplifer using a ´´Transformer-Like-Amplifier” (T.L.A.) configuration with a toroidal Common Mode Rejection Low Pass Filter that excludes frequencies above 150 kHz. The T.L.A. is followed by an actual input transformer permitting a full +25 dBu input signal to be handled at unity gain without an input pad over the whole audio spectrum. This combines the advantages of both an ´´Electronically Balanced” and true transformer input. When the Phantom voltage is switched off, this input serves as a very high quality line input with an impedance of 10,000 ohms.Low Noise, Low Distortion OperationMuch care was given in designing the 5012 to produce as little noise and non-harmonic distortion as possible. Carefully implemented signal paths and Class A operation are a large part of the 5012′s sweet, whisper quiet performance. Why Transformers?A complete discussion on transformers is out of place at this point but a technical discussion will be posted at a later date. Here it is helpful to review some of the essentials where it will be seen that a design needs to be viewed as a whole, not simply from the point of view of a single component. The fine subtleties of circuit design relating to sonic performance are gradually becoming more clearly understood. For example, research has shown conclusively that frequencies above 20 kHz affect the way in which humans perceive sound quality. But, long before scientific evidence emerged a substantial body of musicians and engineers knew that equipment with apparently the same technical measurements could sound very different.Incredibly small amounts of musically dissonant odd harmonics have a disastrous effect on the sound quality. Extraneous noise or interference that finds its way into a signal path seriously impairs performance of the whole chain. Many control rooms make use of outboard gear that is not well protected from external signals. Poor grounding of such equipment can be a serious problem. ´´Electronically balanced” circuits much used in modern equipment, can give very good measurements on the test bench but they do not provide adequate rejection of the stray fields found in every working environment.Input and output circuits must be freed from ground dependence so that only the ´´wanted” signal enters and leaves the processing path. Transformers are the ideal solution. The sweet and silky sound of my classic old favorite consoles was achieved with big transistors and large high quality transformers. Rupert Neve Designs Portico modules achieve similar quality today without the bulk or the cost.In order that modules can work together as would be expected (i.e. in a proprietary console configuration) without producing hum, R.F. interference, or other interactions, the connecting interfaces, grounding, levels and impedances must receive careful attention. Each Portico module is a complete integral signal processor that delivers its specified performance independently. This is one of the reasons we use transformers.
