This study examines Sustainable Water Resource Management (SWRM) using Water Rights Database System (WRDS). The study explores the WRDS of the Water Resources Commission (WRC), Ghana, as a case study, for regulating and managing water resource. It looks at the functions, strengths and weaknesses of the WRDS, the assistance of the Invoicing Database Sub-System (IDSS), and the need to incorporate Quality Management Assurance (QMA) into the WRDS. Water Resource Management (WRM) has been a bane to most countries, albeit, not excluding the developed ones. The Board of the World Bank therefore, taking cognizance of the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, initiated plans in 1993 for a framework to contain the myriads of problems associated with WRM. The WRDS has been successfully implemented, used for capturing data, regulating and monitoring the water resource of Ghana, and generating management reports for decision-making activities.

Dagaaba Concept of God and the Problem of Evil

Philosophers of religion for a long time have concerned themselves with what constitutes theodicy. They have tried variously to establish or dismiss the real existence of an omnipotent and benevolent God and the dreadful presence of evil. Scholars are divided here as to the consistency or otherwise of the real existence of both God and evil. Their arguments seem unending and the discussions are somehow directed towards a total denial of any possible existence of the two concepts: God and evil or a redefinition of the former in order to incorporate undeniable existence of the latter. This book uses hermeneutic method to investigate the concept God and evil among the Dagaaba of Northern Ghana. The Dagaaba as a people conceive of God as a father, a provider, a protector and the creator. In fact their concept of God is almost the same as the classical theists except that the latter see God to be responsible for every happening in this world. The Dagaaba rather see God as knowing everything but not responsible for everything and that every happening is the result of man's free choice of action or inaction.

The cement industry is a vital sector of any economy since infrastructural development forms one of the indicators used in measuring a country's development. Cement revolutionized the building industry because of its early setting and hardening time, and its early strength gain and durability were found to be far superior and better than such materials as lime-pozzolana, lime -sand and lime-soil mixtures/mixes. However, cement has the inherent problems which include high heat of hydration, high shrinkage, potential alkali - silica reaction. It is also easily attacked by sulphates and chlorides. These effects lead to cracks in cement and concrete products and thus deterioration of structures. More importantly, cement production contributes to more than 5% of CO2 emission globally. Current trends in cement production incorporate minor constituent (admixtures), such as fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag, silica, metakaolin, among others, in clinker in order to improve the technical properties and durability of cement to mitigate the effect of acidic waters on cement. Only three pozzolanic materials have been studied extensively in Ghana, namely bauxite waste, clay and steel slag.

In Ghana, discourses in the drive for an appropriate, effective and more sustainable natural resource management remains a challenge to both research and policy. Existing policies and debates have ignore or undervalue the vital and intricate relationship between community people and their natural environment which shape and define the traditional cosmology of indigenous people and influence their worlviews and the way natural resources are managed. Although some attempts have been made to integrate both formal and informal management sytems and practices, they fail to properly incorporate the worldviews and spirituality of local cultures in their approach. Using multiple case studies of indigenous cultures of the Upper West Region this book assesses and discusses the intricate relationships in indigenous cultures and the opportunities that these relationship offer in the search for sustainable natural resource management alternatives using a biocultural lens. It would be of enormous value to students and professionals both in and outside the academia as long as the search for sustainable natural resource management option in new globalising system.

Decentralisation and development expectations f...

Decentralisation has undoubtedly become popular within the global governance arena and development literature since the 1950s. Yet studies have not given rise to a single and coherent approach that can be applied to investigating how decentralisation is actually linked to local level development, how it can be meaningfully based on locally defined parameters and how it can more adequately incorporate the perspectives of local people. The book is an in-depth empirical study of Ghana, specifically in one of the poorest decentralised local government units, Jirapa-Lambussie District, of Ghana. It focuses on the assessment of how decentralisation is linked to local level development outcomes based on local citizens' development expectations of the decentralised governance process - specifically, a bottom-up approach to the study - created a space for local people to assess the outcomes of decentralisation through the lens of their own development expectations. It can be stated that this book has contributed to contemporary decentralisation debate by introducing a participatory dimension to the assessment of how decentralisation is linked to local level development outcomes.

This book aims at identifying some elements and concepts of art and architecture that when incorporated in building designs classifies them African. It also assesses whether evoking such elements and concepts is possible and can be easily identified by the natives of the study area and by foreigners. A survey was conducted to assess the level of awareness in Cape-Coast in Ghana which is rich in cultural heritage sites and African history. Studies of cultural buildings were carried out to find out how character and identity is given to such buildings to make them culturally significant to the particular culture it is designed for. This book endeavors to address the general lack of clarity on the subject of African Art and Architecture and history amongst ordinary Africans. It is hoped that this book will help in the effort towards incorporate African elements and concepts in Architecture to develop a unique African Architecture. Through findings of this thesis, model cultural centers can be designed and subsequently this model will help to educate and inform the design of other cultural buildings and eventually all buildings in Ghana, Africa.

Society and Bureaucracy in 21st Century Ghana

This book examines the factors that affect work performance of Ghanaian bureaucrats. Three decades ago Robert Price (1975) examined the impact that kinship ties had on the motivation of Ghanaian bureaucrats. This study followed the work of Price by replicating his mix of interviews and surveys, with the addition of questions that incorporate recent work on bureaucracy by John Brehm and Scott Gates (1997). Utilizing a mix of interviews and surveys of public servants from the Civil Service and the Ghana Education Service, I find that motivation of Ghanaian bureaucrats involves pecuniary, solidary and functional preferences as well as kinship ties. This is an excellent book for courses in public administration, African government and politics, and for scholars interested in the study of motivation. It will also be useful for students of sociology.
