The age old question of who loves whom is a timeless one that transcends generations. If anyone knew how to incorporate the many intricacies and obstacles of romance into one novel, it was none other than Jane Austen. Few are actually aware that this novel has gone on to inspire many other productions, such as the movie Clueless. The classic focuses on the life of Emma, who is 20 years old when we meet her and is whole-heartedly satisfied with the idea that she will never get married. Despite her aversion to a lifelong commitment to love, throughout the novel, Emma tries to be a matchmaker to both friend and acquaintance, failing miserably at every opportunity. As she meddles her way throughout the book, she ends up considering different men to be her suitor, to which her wiser brother-in-law Mr. Knightly keeps a steady and suspicious eye on. Nearly each time Emma thinks she has a problem solved, Mr. Knightly shows her the error of her ways. At the end of the novel, Emma realizes that she is actually in love with Mr. Knightly. 1. H.D.

H.D. was an American poet, novelist and memoirist best known for her association with the early 20th century avant-garde Imagist group of poets such as Ezra Pound and Richard Aldington. The Imagist model was based on the idioms, rhythms and clarity of common speech, and freedom to choose subject matter as the writer saw fit. H.D.'s later writing developed on this aesthetic to incorporate a more female-centric version of modernism. H.D. was born in Pennsylvania in 1886, and moved to London in 1911 where her publications earned her a central role within then emerging Imagism movement. A charismatic figure, she was championed by the modernist poet Ezra Pound, who was instrumental in building and furthering her career. From 1916 17, she acted as the literary editor of the Egoist journal, while her poetry appeared in the English Review and the Transatlantic Review. During the First World War, H.D. suffered the death of her brother and the break up of her marriage to the poet Richard Aldington, and these events weighed heavily on her later poetry.

Eating the Bible

One weekend, a decade ago, author Rena Rossner was served a bowl of lentil soup at dinner. The portion of the Bible that had been discussed that week was the chapter in which Esau sells his birthright to his brother Jacob for a bowl of red lentil soup. Rossner was struck by the ability to bring the Bible alive in such a tactile way and decided on the spot to see whether she could incorporate the Bible into a meal each week. And so she has. The result,  Eating the Bible, is an innovative cookbook with original, easy-to-prepare recipes that will ignite table conversation while pleasing the stomach. Every meal will become both a tactile and intellectual experience as the recipes enrich both the soul of the cook and the palates of those at the table. Every cook must glance at a recipe countless times before completing a dish. Often recipes involve five- to ten-minute periods during which one must wait for the water to boil, the soup to simmer, or the onions to sauté. It is Rossner’s goal to help enrich those moments with biblical verse and commentary, to enable cooks to feed their souls as they work to feed the members of the household and guests. From the zesty “Garden of Eden Salad” to the “Honey Coriander Manna Bread,” each recipe will delight the palate and spark the mind.

How is it possible for women, men, and children from different cultural and spiritual backgrounds to come together and struggle against common forms of oppression? How can we create relationships and make connections as teachers and practitioners of pastoral care and counseling while we acknowledge and find value in differences? Archie Smith Jr. and Ursula Riedel-Pfaefflin turn to Mark 3:33, 'Who are my mother and my brothers?' and Mark 3:35, 'Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother,' to propose a vision for living creatively within the realities of an intercultural world. Exploring the historical, social, political, economic, and ecological dynamics that shape who we are and how we relate to one another, Smith and Riedel-Pfaefflin uncover the many layers and complexities of race, gender, class, and violence that make change difficult to achieve and sustain, and discuss the significance of an intercultural sibling metaphor for the teaching and training of pastoral care and counseling. The incorporate art, myth, history, social sciences, and scripture to demonstrate how the concepts of intercultural realities, systemic thinking, and narrative agency help us to understand historical processes that still have an influence on today's problems of violence between cultures, races, gender, and religions. Smith and Riedel-Pfaefflin offer their own life experiences, enlightenment from theological giants, teaching tools, group exercises, and case studies to build more culturally competent counseling and teaching and to enhance personal and social transformation.
