This all-new edition of a best-selling text has been thoroughly updated to keep pace with the rapid progress in biological signaling. "This book is actually two books: Regulation and Signal Transduction." (Drug Research)Originally based on a graduate course taught by the author, this true classic has once again been extensively updated to incorporate key new findings in biological signaling. With over half of the content re-written, plus 70 brand new and 50 revised figures, this is the most up-to-date textbook on signaling available anywhere. Thanks to its clear structure, hundreds of illustrative drawings, as well as chapter introductions and newly added study questions, this text excels as a companion for a course on biological signaling, and equally as an introductory reference to the field for students and researchers. Generations of students and junior researchers have relied on "the Krauss" to find their way through the bewildering complexity of biological signaling pathways.

Originally published in 1990,Manic-Depressive Illness was the first book to comprehensively survey the massive body of clinical evidence on bipolar disorder collected over the past several decades, and to assess its meaning for both clinician and scientist. This long-awaited second edition of Manic-Depressive Illness will exhaustively review the biological and genetic literature that has dominated the field in recent years, and incorporate cutting-edge research conducted since publication of the first edition. The medical treatment of manic and depressive episodes is described, strategies for preventing future episodes are given in detail, and psychotherapeutic issues common in this illness are considered. This book, in its newly updated and expanded form, will be a valuable addition to the libraries of psychiatrists and other physicians, psychologists, clinical social workers, neuroscientists, pharmacologists, and the patients and families who live with manic-depressive illness.

From Robocop to the Terminator to Eve 8, no image better captures our deepest fears about technology than the cyborg, the person who is both flesh and metal, brain and electronics. But philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark sees it differently. Cyborgs, he writes, are not something to be feared--we already are cyborgs. In Natural-Born Cyborgs, Clark argues that what makes humans so different from other species is our capacity to fully incorporate tools and supporting cultural practices into our existence. Technology as simple as writing on a sketchpad, as familiar as Google or a cellular phone, and as potentially revolutionary as mind-extending neural implants--all exploit our brains' astonishingly plastic nature. Our minds are primed to seek out and incorporate non-biological resources, so that we actually think and feel through our best technologies. Drawing on his expertise in cognitive science, Clark demonstrates that our sense of self and of physical presence can be expanded to a remarkable extent, placing the long-existing telephone and the emerging technology of telepresence on the same continuum. He explores ways in which we have adapted our lives to make use of technology (the measurement of time, for example, has wrought enormous changes in human existence), as well as ways in which increasingly fluid technologies can adapt to individual users during normal use. Bio-technological unions, Clark argues, are evolving with a speed never seen before in history. As we enter an age of wearable computers, sensory augmentation, wireless devices, intelligent environments, thought-controlled prosthetics, and rapid-fire information search and retrieval, the linebetween the user and her tools grows thinner day by day. "This double whammy of plastic brains and increasingly responsive and well-fitted tools creates an unprecedented opportunity for ever-closer kinds of human-machine merger," he writes, arguing that such a merger is

Overfishing: What Everyone Needs to Know  , Hör...

Over the past twenty years considerable public attention has been focused on the decline of marine fisheries, the sustainability of world fish production, and the impacts of fishing on marine ecosystems. Many have voiced their concerns about marine conservation, as well as the sustainable and ethical consumption of fish. But are fisheries in danger of collapse? Will we soon need to find ways to replace this food system? Should we be worried that we could be fishing certain species to extinction? Can commercial fishing be carried out in a sustainable way? While overblown prognoses concerning the dire state of fisheries are plentiful, clear scientific explanations of the basic issues surrounding overfishing are less so - and there remains great confusion about the actual amount of overfishing and its ecological impact. Overfishing: What Everyone Needs to Know will provide a balanced explanation of the broad issues associated with overfishing. Guiding readers through the scientific, political, economic, and ethical issues associated with harvesting fish from the ocean, it will provide answers to questions about which fisheries are sustainably managed and which are not. Ray and Ulrike Hilborn address topics including historical overfishing, high seas fisheries, recreational fisheries, illegal fishing, climate and fisheries, trawling, economic and biological overfishing, and marine protected areas. In order to illustrate the effects of each of these issues, they will incorporate case studies of different species of fish. Overall, the authors present a hopeful view of the future of fisheries. Most of the world's fisheries are not overfished, and many once overfished stocks are now rebuilding. In fact, we can learn from the management failures and successes to ensure that fisheries are sustainable and contribute to national wealth and food security. Concise and clear, this book presents a compelling "big picture" of the state of oceans and the so 1. Language: English. Narrator: Noah Michael Levine. Gorilla, Chimpanzee and Buffalo Conservation in...

Despite the global increase in the number of protected areas, it is greatly remarked that biological values are not delimited by protected areas since all species do not have the same habitat requirements as well as do not have the same range boundaries (Milligan, 2009). As such, the Black Bush Areas of Waindow in Menchum South, NW Cameroon, retain value and are therefore of prime importance for wildlife conservation activities due to the presence of large charismatic mammal species and their role in the connectivity to protected areas. The global objective of this study was to established base line information on large mammal populations which will contribute to their conservation in the study site. From the study, one could deduce that the pressures exacerbated on these animals due to human activities placed the remaining gorilla, chimpanzees, buffalos and other large mammal populations under intense threat of disappearing. It is therefore necessary to alleviate, revive and incorporate some of these pressures, into modern-day conservation strategies that can help to urgently conserve the remaining large mammal species.

Enamines as Synthons for Fused Heterocycles

The aim of the present work is to design and synthesize fused bicyclic or polycyclic ring systems containing isoxazole which incorporate heterocyclic moieties of biological value. The objective of this work was directed to annulate 5-aminoisoxazole derivatives as an important synthons which have binucleophilc function towards certain reagent. Furthermore, studying the biological activity of the prepared isoxazole derivatives as antitumor agents was achieved. Thus, in the light of the aforementioned importance of the 5-amino-3-methylisoxazole, the present work is planned to investigate the behavior of 5-amino-3-methylisoxazole (1) and its derivatives towards various reagents.
