´´Eveline´´ is a short story from James Joyce´s classic Dubliners. Nineteen-year-old Eveline has decided to leave home, but her future journey may not be all that she hopes. Like other stories in Dubliners,´´Eveline´´ offers a penetrating analysis of Dublin society, especially its stagnation and paralysis. Each story incorporates epiphanies, by which Joyce meant to convey a sudden consciousness of the ´´soul´´ of a thing. Sir Thomas More´s Utopia has spurred debate, reflection, and critical thinking since its original publication in the 16th century. More´s fictional island of Utopia provides an exploration of issues that shook him and his contemporaries and that continue to be problematic in the modern day. The details of More´s utopian society, such as the permissibility of euthanasia and comments on chastity in the priesthood combine with proposals for the coexistence of varied religions to put forth a work that incorporates the totality of More´s religious, sociological, and philosophical talents. ´´I thought that I had already thought about everything you could think about Love when Henry Drummond´s sermon fell into my hands. My life changed a lot from the moment I read the words in this book and tried to put his teaching into practice.´´ (Paulo Coelho) ´´If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.´´ At some point, all of us have heard this passage from St. Paul´s Letter to the Corinthians. But do we really understand his message? At the end of the 19th century, the young missionary Henry Drummond was asked to replace a famous preacher. Though at the beginning he did not convince the audience, they were soon captivated by his analysis of the words of the Apostle Paul. This sermon, The Greatest Thing in the World, has become a classic and is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful texts ever written on love. Drummond broke it down into the following nine elements: patience, kindness, generosity, humility, gentleness, dedication, tolerance, sincerity and innocence. Contrary to what we are used to hearing, the greatest treasure in the spiritual life is not faith, but love. No matter what your religious beliefs are, this feeling is, without doubt, the most rewarding way to live. In The Supreme Gift, Paulo Coelho adapts Henry Drummond´s text, offering a real and powerful message that will help us incorporate love into our daily life and experience all its transformational power in our lives. 1. Renowned poet and novelist Jay Parini´s The Way of Jesus is a book for progressive Christians and spiritual seekers who struggle, as Parini does, with some of the basic questions about human existence: its limits and sadnesses, and its possibilities for awareness and understanding. Part guide to Christian living, part spiritual autobiography, The Way of Jesus is Jay Parini´s exploration of what Jesus really meant, his effort to put love first in our daily lives. A lifelong Christian who has at times wavered and questioned his beliefs, Parini recounts his own efforts to follow Jesus´s example, examines the contours of Christian thinking, and describes the solace and structure one can find in the rhythms of the church calendar. Parini´s refreshingly undogmatic approach to Christian thinking incorporates teachings from other religions, as well as from poets and other writers who have helped Parini along his path to understanding. 1. A Study in Scarlet is a detective novel by British author Arthur Conan Doyle. Written in 1886, the story marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who would become two of the most famous characters in popular fiction. The book´s title derives from a speech given by Holmes, an amateur detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story´s murder investigation as his ´´study in scarlet´´: ´´There´s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.´´ Although Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories featuring Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is one of only four full-length novels in the original canon. A Study in Scarlet was the first work of detective fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as an investigative tool. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Preece.
