Money is something we handle every day. But how deeply does the Bible inform what we do with it? If we truly want to honor the Lord in how we use it, should we be giving most of it away? Is money basically a necessary evil - a constant temptation in our pocket? Are we wrong for wanting to take vacations with our families, for example, when we could be giving that money to others in need? Instead of just letting you hear the answers to questions like these, this book presents them in a richly informative and inspiring devotional experience. As you daily explore 12 Things Jesus Said about Money, you´ll be learning and reinforcing new convictions, each of them grounded in what Jesus himself taught. Not only will it clear up misconceptions or conflicting messages you may have heard over the years, it will help you express these same truths to your children, incorporate them into your ongoing decisions, and enjoy a new measure of freedom in your financial life. 1. This important volume focuses on the sensitive issue of interrelationships between national parks situated near or within urban areas and their urban environment. It engages with both urban and conservation issues and and compares four national parks located in four large cities in the global South: Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Mumbai, and Nairobi. Though primarily undertaken as academic research, the project has intensively collaborated with the institutions in charge of these parks. The comparative structure of this volume is also original and unique: each of the chapters incorporates insight from all four sites as far as possible. The term ´´naturbanity´´ expresses the necessity for cities endowed with a national park to integrate it into their functioning. Conversely, such parks must take into account their location in an urban environment, both as a source of heavy pressures on nature and as a nexus of incentives to support their conservation. The principle of non-exclusivity, that is, neither the city nor the park has a right nor even the possibility to negate the other´s presence, summarizes the main argument of this book. Naturbanity thus blurs the old ´´modern´´ dichotomy of nature/culture: animals and human beings can often jump the physical and ideological walls separating many parks from the adjacent city. The 13 chapters and substantive introduction of this volume discuss various aspects of naturbanity: the histories of park creation; interaction between people and parks; urban governance and parks; urban conservation models; wildlife management; environmental education; and so on. This is a must-read for students and researchers interested in social ecology, social geography, conservation, urban planning and ecological policy.
The author of this system, Andy Fuehl, was downsized and unemployed after devoting over 15 years to corporate America. Yet, he became a millionaire in less than three years as a result of using the accelerated subconscious reprogramming technology and specific strategies, behaviors, and beliefs of the ultra-wealthy that you´ll be using in this system. Thousands of other people have also used this system to create an abundant and happy life instead of just getting by, wishing and hoping it would change. Now, you too can take control of your life and start the business of your dreams, doing the work you love, or skyrocket the results of your current business to new heights exactly the way you want. Here´s a fraction of what you´ll learn in this system: Why a job is much riskier than being in your own business. How to determine your true purpose so that you choose a business that expresses your own values. How to minimize the emotions that hinder success in entrepreneurship and maximize the emotions proven to help you succeed. How to incorporate the three ingredients necessary for effective change - Awareness, Acceptance, Action - into your everyday life. The most powerful negotiating strategy ever used to produce win-win results. How to launch your own business even if you´re currently employed or unemployed. How to make the transition from having a job to being a successful entrepreneur in the business of your choice. The language of success that stimulates you and motivates you to take action now. Global Supply Chain Security and Management: Appraising Programs, Preventing Crimes examines the relationship between securing a supply chain and promoting more efficient worldwide trade. Historically, the primary goal of supply chain security was guarding against theft and damage. Today, supply chains are also on the frontlines in the fight against terrorism. This book showcases industry leaders and their best practices, also exploring how the government is both a policing organization and a supply chain partner. In addition, it covers the critical roles that various technologies play, focusing on how Big Data is collected and turned into knowledge. By using the tools provided, readers will gain a stronger understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by any organization that imports or exports products. Outlines the latest technologies being used to secure infrastructures Leverages game theory to express the strategic interactions of government and business Covers the latest U.S. regulations and provides analytical tools to help make sense of these regulations Incorporates the latest theories and techniques of industrial organization, economics, and security Darren Prokop, Ph.D. is a professor of logistics in the College of Business & Public Policy at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. He is also the director of the Master of Science in Global Supply Chain Management Program. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Manitoba in 1999. Dr. Prokop specializes in transportation economics and its effects on international trade and supply chain security. He is also engaged in research examining the role of government policy as related to transportation, infrastructure provision, and non-tariff trade barriers. Dr. Prokops Alaska-based research and publications involve air cargo logistics and port development. In addition to publishing his research in academic journals and trade magazines, Dr. Prokop is an active consultant to government and business. Dr. Prokops nearly 20-year academic career is also complemented by work in the manufacturing industry and in government as a policy economist.
The elaboration of linguistic theories depends on the existence of adequate descriptions of particular languages; otherwise theories will be poorly grounded on empirical data. This book starts from theoretical points of wide acceptance among linguists and goes on to present a descriptive metalanguage, able to express the facts of verb valency, which constitute one of the core areas in linguistic description. Most of the data come from an extensive survey under way of the valency of Portuguese verbs; but the present works relevance goes well beyond that, and incorporates a proposal applicable to other European languages, illustrated by the wealth of English examples included in the exposition. Among the topics discussed are the syntactic component of constructions (following here a proposal recently published in Culicover and Jackendoffs Simpler Syntax ); delimitation and definition of semantic roles; the role of linking rules and their relation to prototypes; and the connection between linguistic expressions and cognitive units such as frames and schemata. The result is a notational system flexible and robust enough to describe all aspects of verb valency. Mário A. Perini holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Texas and did postdoctoral work at the University of Illinois. He taught Linguistics and Portuguese at three Brazilian universities (UFMG, UNICAMP and PUC-Minas) and two American ones (Illinois and Mississippi). To date, he has published twelve books on Linguistics and on the Portuguese language, including the first ever grammar of spoken Brazilian Portuguese. His main areas of interest are Portuguese Grammar, Cognition, Construction Grammars, Methodology, and Linguistic Theory and Analysis. He is currently developing research on verb valencies at Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil (UFMG), where he leads a project involving researchers from four Brazilian universities; the project aims at the construction of a valency dictionary of Brazilian Portuguese.
The oral tradition of the Winnebago, or Ho-Chunk, people ranges from creation myths to Trickster stories and histories of the tribe. It is particularly strong in animal tales, as storyteller and tribal historian David Lee Smith vividly demonstrates in Folklore of the Winnebago Tribe, a collection drawn from the Smithsonian Institution and other sources, including the work of contemporaries. Smith himself contributes fourteen tales. In the book we meet relatively recent characters such as Ho-poe-kaw (Glory-of-the-Morning), the famed and formidable woman chief who battled many other tribes as well as whites, threw historic alliances into disarray, and -- although she often discomfited the French -- married a Frenchman. We also encounter traditional figures, Trickster, talking dogs, Eagle, Owl, and Rabbit, moving through the chronicles of this Woodland people who stemmed from the Great Lakes region. The tales incorporate both the visionary and the down-to-earth. Some are deeply moving. Some, reflecting earlier times, are full of violence. Today the Winnebago number around ten thousand, living on reservations and in cities. By including both old and new stories in the manner of the oral tradition, Smith hopes to show readers how the Winnebago people express themselves. Whether invoking the terrors of the age of Ice Giants or describing Trickster barreling down the highway in an automobile, ´´As long as there is one Winnebago left in the world, storytelling will continue´´.
´´Eric Evans has written a fantastic book on how you can make the design of your software match your mental model of the problem domain you are addressing. ´´His book is very compatible with XP. It is not about drawing pictures of a domain; it is about how you think of it, the language you use to talk about it, and how you organize your software to reflect your improving understanding of it. Eric thinks that learning about your problem domain is as likely to happen at the end of your project as at the beginning, and so refactoring is a big part of his technique. ´´The book is a fun read. Eric has lots of interesting stories, and he has a way with words. I see this book as essential reading for software developers-it is a future classic.´´ - Ralph Johnson , author of Design Patterns ´´If you don´t think you are getting value from your investment in object-oriented programming, this book will tell you what you´ve forgotten to do. ´´Eric Evans convincingly argues for the importance of domain modeling as the central focus of development and provides a solid framework and set of techniques for accomplishing it. This is timeless wisdom, and will hold up long after the methodologies du jour have gone out of fashion.´´ - Dave Collins , author of Designing Object-Oriented User Interfaces ´´Eric weaves real-world experience modeling-and building-business applications into a practical, useful book. Written from the perspective of a trusted practitioner, Eric´s descriptions of ubiquitous language, the benefits of sharing models with users, object life-cycle management, logical and physical application structuring, and the process and results of deep refactoring are major contributions to our field.´´ - Luke Hohmann , author of Beyond Software Architecture This book belongs on the shelf of every thoughtful software developer. --Kent Beck What Eric has managed to capture is a part of the design process that experienced object designers have always used, but that we have been singularly unsuccessful as a group in conveying to the rest of the industry. We´ve given away bits and pieces of this knowledge...but we´ve never organized and systematized the principles of building domain logic. This book is important. --Kyle Brown, author of Enterprise Java(TM) Programming with IBM® WebSphere® The software development community widely acknowledges that domain modeling is central to software design. Through domain models, software developers are able to express rich functionality and translate it into a software implementation that truly serves the needs of its users. But despite its obvious importance, there are few practical resources that explain how to incorporate effective domain modeling into the software development process. Domain-Driven Design fills that need. This is not a book about specific technologies. It offers readers a systematic approach to domain-driven design, presenting an extensive set of design best practices, experience-based techniques, and fundamental principles that facilitate the development of software projects facing complex domains. Intertwining design and development practice, this book incorporates numerous examples based on actual projects to illustrate the application of domain-driven design to real-world software development. Readers learn how to use a domain model to make a complex development effort more focused and dynamic. A core of best practices and standard patterns provides a common language for the development team. A shift in emphasis--refactoring not just the code but the model underlying the code--in combination with the frequent iterations of Agile development leads to deeper insight into domains and enhanced communication between domain expert and programmer.
